Women have long been instrumental in the development of arts, business, politics, science, and sports. Their impact in society is recognized with the annual celebration of Women’s History Month, celebrated March 1-31, since 1987, to history, culture, and society.
As we highlight women, we want to be sure to recognize the passing of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) – which was recognized on February 2. NGWSD recognizes student-athletes, champion athletes, coaches, administrators, and lawmakers committed to providing equitable access to sports for all girls and women. Abbreviated as NGWSD, this day is about breaking the gender stereotypes built around the sports industry. Helping girls and women sidelined from a sport due to gender is the narrative that NGWSD advocates for and encourages that women belong in every aspect of sports. StarterStudio recognizes the founders that are celebrating, inspiring, and supporting girls and women in sports by their innovative technologies and platforms.

Women’s History Month & International Women’s Day – Did you Know?
The National Women’s History Alliance designates a yearly theme for Women’s History Month and this year’s is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” It was selected as “both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.”
Another highlight in March is International Women’s Day, which is a global celebration of the economic, political, and social achievements of women, celebrated on March 8. It first took place in 1911 and is a celebration around the world, where many countries recognize the achievements of women with demonstrations, educational initiatives, and customs such as presenting women with gifts and flowers.
The United Nations has sponsored International Women’s Day since 1975. It adopted the resolution to observe it during the General Assembly citing the following reasons: “To recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.”
